archive for March 2010

i always get thrill when a nice little surprise drops into my inbox, especially when it comes from people I haven’t heard of. i got this neat little mix called ‘xxxxx’ sent to me by lithuanian dj remedy and i couldn’t wait to share it with you all today. armed with decks and a crazy selection, remedy has been digging his way into the world of music for quite a long time now. i really like his style as it is a mixture of beats, dubstep, hip-hop, electronic music and anything in between, which leaves space for surprises. oh, and the best part is, it is a free download that you can cop on his soundcloud page. happy listening!

70 Million by Hold Your Horses ! from L’Ogre on Vimeo.

the moment of an online discovery for something which is original creative and a must share is a good feeling! that’s exactly what it was like when google reader displayed a video from  swedish outfit, hold your horses

we do like music videos, and we also like arty stuff, so there is a good chance that we’ll like something that is a combination of both. the video is for the bands new catchy tune ’70 million’, where they imitate scene’s from famous paintings. they do it in such a way that makes art history look cool!
for the curious amongst you, here is a list of all the paintings depicted in the video.

happy monday my friends! it is not often you will catch me promoting overly mainstream and commercial music, but i simply can’t get enough of rihanna’s latest single “rude boy”. it must be something in the air, or potentially the water, because i have been singing along to it all weekend and it won’t go out of my head. the video reminds me a lot of m.i.a. and her videos, and since i am a sucker for a lot of bright colour, i thought we might as well kick off this week in a colourful way.

Screen shot 2010-03-19 at 15.37.17.pngso some of you may already be aware of this blog, it’s pretty well known, and has just grown and grown over the years.

psfk is great. fullstop. if you are into design, tech, art, interesting brand campaigns, green technology and everything in between, this is the place for you. they essentially take the best of the web and push it out in short concise, image led posts.
looking for some inspiration for an art project you have to do? go browse their arts & culture section, and just look at all the wonderful things you can ogle over!
this is definitely one of my favourite blogs ever, and they are doing really well for themselves! they curate a “purple list” which has contact details of every type of creative professional. brands approach them for advice, they do talks all over the world, and just generally go around being awesome.
at the centre of it all is one piers fawkes, who is editor in chief and founder. he has a really cool linkedin profile, have a read here. he started the blog when he had just moved to new york from london, and was without a job. little did he know that he was starting one of the most influential idea blogs in the world
rss them, tweet them, fan them. trust me.

eglo records has made it’s imprint as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking labels in the underground music scene. hailing from east london, they have already set the bar pretty high with the hugely popular releases from floating points. however, 2010 seems to be the year of eglo, as they are growing bigger and stronger than ever before. the mini-documentary above features label founder alex nut (who’s show on rinse.fm you simply have to check out!), as well as eglo producer funkineven and the oh so wonderful & soulful singer fatima (who i mentioned a couple of months ago). it is an interesting watch and definitely something i would recommend. plus, the music they are releasing is amazing, so you better click on those links and get educated on the eglo sound. happy friday!

another year, another bunch of sport relief celeb challenges for us to marvel at!

now, i love seeing celebs out of their comfort zone, and i love celebs who use their status to help others, so sport relief is always entertaining!
so, this year, my favourite challenges have to be helen’s amazon experience, and christine water skiing across the english channel. other challenges include a celeb team cycle from john o groats to lands end, and lawrence dallaglio cycling from rome to edinburgh.
some of the videos have already been uploaded onto the official website, but some are also going to be shown on the telly over the coming weeks, so have a look here to make sure you dont miss your fave celeb challenge video.
also, if you haven’t already sponsored a celeb or a local team, head over to the site and get on it!

i usually never big myself up because im just not that type of gal. however, sometimes i am a bit cheeky and make an exception to the rule. i guess this is one of those times… some of you might not know, but i host my own radio show on laid back radio called “little miss sunshiine” and the latest edition is packed with artists who’s music i am really feeling at the moment. so in theory, i am bigging them up in this post, not myself (that’s at least the story im going to stick to haha). the show includes a very healthy dose of wobbly, bass heavy, booty shaking tunes from the likes of filtercutter, fantastic mr fox, om unit and altered natives. not to mention a highly addictive remix of crystal fighters “i love london” by brackles and my latest obsession, “acid” by terror danjah. now if that isn’t a bag of goodies for you i don’t know what is! so what you waiting for? dig in!

today news broke that jedward were dropped by their record label, sony, after just one single (above video). less than a year after the burst on to the scene, critics see this as the final straw, the end of jedward!
should we be so lucky? we first saw john and edward in the x-factor auditions, and they immediately repelled many of the viewing public and simon cowell, their days seemed numbered.
however, against all the odds they surrived week after week, turning in some infamous performances such as ghost busters, and oops i did it again! finally, with 6 acts remaining the public voted them off, would jedward be no more?
they proved doubters wrong again with a record deal, a single with ice tea reaching number 2 in the charts, being a main attraction in the sell out x-factor tour and a tour of ireland planned for april, it seemed as if they could do no wrong.
if the short life span of jedward has thought us anything, is that it is not wise to write them off! judging by the online reaction, with supportes trending #wehatesony on twitter, it would be foolish to speak of the end of jedward just yet!

ouldn’t think of a more perfect way to start this sunny new week than with andreya triana’s absolutely wonderful debut single, “lost where i belong”, that will be released on ninja tune in april. she has worked with the likes of bonobo and flying lotus, and is one of the most talented new uk singers out there.
to top it all off, not only does she have a remarkable voice (that i am slightly jealous of to be honest) but she is also a real sweetheart, and i simply cant wait to get my hands on her album that will be out in august… happy monday!

dailyvitmains absolutely loves original creative talent such as this viral video doing the rounds today shows teddy bears taking over worthing sea front! it didn’t actually happen ;-)
it’s the video animation called cycles by cyriak, they also did the music available to download here
as well as the original idea, there is seriously slick animation skills at play. check out more of the same on cyriak’s youtube channel.
cyriak does make a disclaimer however which we feel obliged to include also: ‘no teddy bears were harmed in the making of this video.’
