we are big fans of music site, mixcloud, and as regular readers will know, we feature playlists from mixcloud on our music posts all the time. so, we thought it was about time we me one of the guys behind the site. introducing mixcloud co-founder, nikhil…
what’s
your nickname, after all, we’re all friends here that’s
easy, sketchy. it’s my dj name. but i do also have a variety of other
nicknames, many of which are based on the theme of punctuality… or lack
thereof.
now we’re
bezzie mates, tell us something exclusively about yourself that most
people don’t know. embarrassingly,
i’m a bit of a chocaholic. hold on, most of my mates probably know that.
what
question are you sick of being asked and why? “how
does your website make money?” i love answering that question from people
who are interested in cool stuff, have taken the time to understand what we’re
all about and want to have a constructive conversation. i’ve got no time for
people who think they’re being clever by asking aggressive and challenging
questions.
can
you tell us about a time when an interview has gone badly? a few
months ago during sxsw we were asked to do an ichat interview with the lovely
folks at bamm.tv (as you may have guessed we weren’t out in texas “doing
business”). there i was sitting in my bedroom in my pyjamas, serious
bed-head. little did i realise it was featured live on the front page of
justin.tv and we had something like 700 people watching. hopefully it didn’t
affect the quality of the conversation
most
of us like to not be nude in public, so what’s your favourite brand/designer
for covering yourself in? (and have you ever been nude in public?) i like
my denim. big fan of a good pair of levis jeans, best worn with high-tops.
ashamedly i’ve been getting quite into polo shirts of late! i can highly
recommend the silk market in beijing for a good bit of retail therapy. never
been nude in public – boring.
if you
could work with anyone who would it be and why? what a
question. i have a soft spot in my heart for the hip-hop legends. i’d love to
work with and hang out with the likes of uestlove from the roots, mos def,
jazzy jeff, dj premier, pete rock, nas, jay z and so on. in fact, wouldn’t it
be cool to get them in a room with the new school of wonky, low-slung hip-hop
producers – flying lotus, rustie, hudson mohawke, mike slott etc – and see what
magic happens.
we all
like to know our stuff, if you could be a connoisseur/guru/demi-god of
something what would it be? understanding
people.
i know
it’s early days, but when you do eventually give up the game, what are you
going to do in retirement? or are you going to be the new rolling stones? hopefully
i’ll always continue being involved with cool stuff – obviously the definition
of cool alters with age and interests. i can definitely foresee a lot of
hanging out with my crew, sipping tea, listening to beats and playing chess.
that’s the life.
who in
your mind is the hottest talent that we should know about? funny
you should ask that. i just returned from sonar last week and was absolutely
blown away by a kid called lunice. he was on the red bull music academy stage
before jackmaster. the boy’s got swagger. also my boy george fitzgerald who’s
about to release his first 12″ on scuba’s hotflush label – style akin to
joy orbison. finally a friend of mine who recently moved to shanghai and is
making very interesting autonomic style drum n bass – his name’s conrank. if
any of you are at secret garden party in july we’ve got george and conrank
playing on friday night in the planet of the antics – obligatory listening!
and
finally, what are your “famous last words”? not
really famous last words but a famous last question. in the words of mos def,
why do you need id to get id? if i had an id i wouldn’t need an id.
