archive for August 2010

if i could have one wish, it would be to sit and select and listen to music all day long. people talk about yoga and meditation, but for me personally, digging through music and selecting songs is the most relaxing and therapeutic thing i could possibly imagine. the past few months i have been having a huge craving for music and this has obviously resulted in quite a lot of mixes, some that i have shared here with you guys. however, i feel like i have reached a point where i simply need to take a step back and refocus on other things, like my radio show for example.

so for today’s power-chart i present to you my last mix for a while. it was inspired by a lot of things and people. it includes some songs i adore that contains original samples from more recent songs that i fell in love with whilst getting into music in the first place and some other tunes that just has special value to me. basically, if i summed it all up (and this might sound very cheesy, i know…), it is a mix about love, the journey of love and the way it feels when you are discovering all the different sides of love. all of that, translated and blended into a delicious 70 minute hiphop/funk/jazz/soul/disco mix. so i hope you enjoy, i’ll be back with a wicked “kid, you betta know your history part 2″ next week so prepare yourselves! oh and if you missed the first one, shame on you, tune in and dust off your hiphop knowledge here!

hello my friends! hope you had a nice weekend! today is monday and today we love, we love, we looove put me on it! i say we, but i do mean me, although you should love it too! not only because it is one of the best uk music blogs out there, and not only because amelia (the girl who runs things) is so fantastic and passionate and friendly and all around fabulous, but also because she promotes great music and artists, and because she occasionally puts together these amazing little treats filled with fresh, free and phenomenal music. this is the 22nd edition of the put me on it “we love” series, and it is an absolute must have! it is packed with yummy tunes, and i cant give her enough credit for taking the time to compile these wonderful musical treats every now and again! Download We Love #22 and visit the put me on it site for the full tracklist.

a couple of weeks ago i randomly came across craft above, a rather cool duo from sweden. of course i was intrigued straight away as it is always nice to meet people from back home. whilst i was trying to do a little (harmless!!) cyber stalking, i quickly realised that they made music which actually is pretty decent electronic/wonky/whatever you want to call it (you can tune in and download it above).
anyway, as you might have noticed, i was rather spoiled with music for my birthday, and i found out that one of the guys from craft above had his birthday on the 5th aug, but that he had never received a mix that was made especially for him. obviously,i felt like i simply had to make him something since i had gotten so many nice dedications. and so i did and you can tune in to the result below :) enjoy and have an amazing weekend! (i promise this is my last birthday post haha)

i know i know, you must be sick and tired of all this birthday talk and nonsense, but i simply couldn’t resist sharing this with you guys because its just too good!

apart from my own birthday and several other good friends birthdays this month, my pals over at mixcloud are celebrating their one year birthday as well. now, i am aware of the usual procedure of our power-chart wednesdays, but today i felt like breaking away from the spotify playlist norm in order to share 2 fantastic mixcloud mixes (and with plenty more to come this month!) the mix above is made by who sampled and is packed with delicious tunes that have been sampled in one way or another. the mix below is made by my lovely belgium based laid back family who have cooked up a tasty mix containing a bunch of laid back collaborators and artists.

so big up mixcloud for a great website and platform, looking forward discovering more amazing music in the year to come. enjoy the mixes my friends and have a happy wednesday!

last week we announced the arrival of our ‘vit pack’, who each front one of the delicious vitaminwater flavours, and now it’s time to dish the dirt on the eight fresh faces that are plastered up on billboards everywhere!

up first, and set to be one of the faces of summer, we have miss revive. a party girl with a twinkle in her eye, she is often hitting the tiles in her 1940s get up, painting the town – specifically east london, where she runs a club night ! but there’s a lot more to her than that – where do we begin?  university lecturer – yes, vintage shop queen – yes.  afro-cuban choir singer – yes. we could go on…

living in hackney on and off for almost a decade, she embraces the creative energy of the area as well as its cultural diversity; not only because hackney has a higher concentration of artists than anywhere else in britain, but she should know what she’s talking about – she studied at the prestigious school of african and oriental studies and is now studying for a phd all about cultural diversity.

miss revive will be soon be making her mark on the creative landscape of east london – she is planning to open a vintage clothes store, called ‘east of eden’ on balls pond road.

so keep an eye out, this lass is set for big things!

today my friends, is a very special day, and if you popped in this past friday, you might know why. yes indeed, it is my birthday today wohoo! and even though i am not the biggest fan of getting older, i have to admit that the responses i have been getting has been very overwhelming! i had not one, but two fantastic radio shows on space invader radio dedicated to me yesterday, and if that wasn’t enough to make me blush and go red like a tomato, i also received this wonderful mix above from my dear friend and music lover paul riley. it is a heart warming mix filled with music that i absolutely adore, so a massive thank you to paul for taking the time to put it together for me!

having said that, i also have many friends who were born roughly around the same time as me. so what better way to show my appreciation than to make a birthday mix myself! whilst paul’s is more soul/r&b/funk oriented, mine is on the jazz tip. however, i feel that the two compliment each other very well, and what better way to celebrate than two fabulous mixes that satisfy any kind of mood you might be in. so enjoy and have a wonderful monday!
