archive for February 2011

highlights from day 2 of lfw with alexa chung, jamilla jamal and more!

one event, over 100 designers, thousands of fashionistas hydrated by yours truly, and countless sore feet, everywhere… it must mean that london fashion week has comes to a close for another season. (let’s speak no more about that, we’re pretty beat up about it.)

of course, we saw our fair share of trends, tickets, tears, and tantrums – but all with good reason… london fashion week isn’t part of the ‘big 4′ for nothing.

from the crazy patterns found on the runways of vivienne westwood, ashish and christopher kane; to the monochrome goodness of meadham kirchhoff and giles – london has certainly cemented it’s position as the home of edgy fashion! just ask the front row-ers (or frowers, as they like to call them), consisting of the who’s who (and wannabe who’s who) of the fashion world rocking more labels than you can shake a stick at!

the fash pack were certainly a sight to behold this season, as we saw everything from leather to leotards, feathers to frills, and even heelless heels! be sure to check out our favourites below, as well as albums on our facebook page. this season also saw a couple of firsts: the first time we realized that comfortable shoes are a must at fashion week, and the first time a show was shown on the piccadilly circus sign as we teamed up with burberry to broadcast their new collection!

phew! so as the bustle at somerset house winds down, we’re taking things easy at hq with long well-deserved sips of our revive. until next season that is…

lips.jpg

each season, designers and their creative teams give us a whole bunch of beauty ideas to play with.

here are five that you might be trying before spring.

the fruit inspired lip: lip colours go fruity with strawberry pinks and tangerine oranges.

the red eyeshadow: also known as the zombie look. red eyeshadow for a grunge effect.

the bobbed bang:
who thought the mid length bob with a fringe would be a beauty trend? is it just me or do bobs remind you of suburban housewives?

the big hair: it is big, seventies inspired and was on a catwalk near you. will you be trying the blow out?

slicked back: if big hair is not for you, then maybe this seasons slicked back hair is.

what beauty trends borrowed off the catwalk are you experimenting with?

come friday, whether you love it or loathe it, the mighty london fashion week rolls into town once again for the first of its two annual visits, and we’ll be on the frontline to greet it with open arms!

it’s not exactly hard to miss, especially if you happen to find yourself within close proximity of the makeshift (and rather majestic) home of fashion for the week, somerset house. just keep a sneaky ear out for the clobber of sky high heels, made by the thousands of die hard fashionistas paving tracks to shows such as burberry, ppq, issa london, vivienne westwood and christopher kane.

worry not however if a trip to the fashion heartland is not on the cards, as vitaminwater is an official sponsor and will be on hand to bring you the best of fashion week…

we’ll be right in the thick of the mayhem to keep you updated on the most outlandish outfits and quirky trends as they happen – so don’t miss a thing by liking us on facebook and following us on twitter!

also, in between propping up the front row and mingling with the style spotters, we’ll be giving away some enviable prizes for everyday of fashion week on our new facebook ‘lfw’ competition tab – kicking off with a pair of office shoes every month for a year to one lucky winner! so what are you waiting for… get liking!

phew… looks like it’s going to be a busy week! only question now is – what to wear?

yeesh. it seems barely yesterday that the style spotters donned their highest heels to make the bi-annual pilgrimage to cutting edge fashion, also known as london fashion week. and now in exactly one weeks time, the madness kicks off again, so it only seems right for a fashion focused blog love!

and this girl certainly gets fashion. style maven stevie and her blog discotheque confusion are a guiding light to the inspiration hungry! a self-confessed enthusiast of 70′s overalls, suede, and cheeseplants(?!), she is certainly a girl after our own hearts. we love her inspiration collages in particular, as they’re a great source of fashion knowledge without any of the dreaded leg work!

so keep it locked to discotheque confusion to stay in the loop (it’s a pretty swell place to be), and if you’re on twitter – don’t forget to say hello!

platfoms.jpg

flat platforms sound confusing don’t they? platforms are usually neck breaking height, so flat platforms? see what I mean? confusing!
well they are causing as much of a storm as kitten heels did last season. did you succumb to the kitten heel?

the trend goes tragedy is a mix of a wedge, far eastern stack wooden slipper and western platform.

always wanted to look like a Geisha morphed with your stacked platform? this look is right up that street.

we’ve been aware for some time that the cat community has a plan in motion for world domination, and now it seems that adopting human attributes is the next step in their cunning plan!

however, we all need a bit of r&r sometimes, and nothing hits the spot like a hearty meal (except for a bottle of revive that is) after a long day of scheming and conspiring. it would seem that this hard working cat doesn’t waste anytime tucking in and putting his newfound dexterity to good use!

om-nom-nom-nom…

denim jacket.jpg

i do not know about you but i am sick of the cold! i cannot wait to ditch my blanket heavy winter coat for spring alternatives.

what winter coat has seen you through the snow and cold? lately, i have been wearing lots of faux furs and faux shearling.

this spring is all about…

peacoats: why do peacoats work so well with spring? i am not sure but they cropped up everywhere on spring summer catwalks.

biker jackets: did you work the winter shearling trend? well swap it for the biker trend. not sure what you need to wear this trend? a leather biker jacket will do quite nicely.

trench/mac coats: chic, timeless and works a punch with the 70′s trend.

lingerie inspired bed coats: thoughts on the lingerie as outerwear? well it goes one step further this season with floaty, bed like negligee jackets worn over clothes.

long denim coat: it is soft, it is 70′s inspired, it is in a high street store near you. it will be everywhere this summer.

this one is for everyone who just can’t lay the weekend to rest. dance maven willy joy has just dropped the video for his new track, woman like me. rest assured, the tribal beat and catchy one-liner will keep you in high sprits all day.

…even if it is monday.

in these penny pinching dark days lusting after fashion can be rather an upsetting preoccupation. so praise be to the wonderful, utterly stylish Jazmine Rocks, for being a guiding light with her consistently great outfits, always put together on a tight, tight budget.

we are particular fans of her many charity shop finds – she has a talent for picking out beautiful scarves, huge jumpers and coats (often for less than the going rate of one of our bottles) and throwing them together like no-one else. and she always finishes her artistic photos with the cost of each outfit – just so we know that looking good on a budget is more than possible.

if you’re in the need of a little budget inspiration be sure to check out her blog jazzabelle’s diary at  and hunt her down on twitter.

happy friday!

the 70′s trend has a lot to answer for this season! fringing is everywhere. It is hanging off casual and evening wear. It is also swishing off accessories.

is it a trend or a tragedy? i think it should come with a ‘wear with caution’ label.

after all, no one wants to end up looking like they are in cowboy costume or even worse unraveling at their very seams!
