highlights from day 2 of lfw with alexa chung, jamilla jamal and more!

one event, over 100 designers, thousands of fashionistas hydrated by yours truly, and countless sore feet, everywhere… it must mean that london fashion week has comes to a close for another season. (let’s speak no more about that, we’re pretty beat up about it.)

of course, we saw our fair share of trends, tickets, tears, and tantrums – but all with good reason… london fashion week isn’t part of the ‘big 4′ for nothing.

from the crazy patterns found on the runways of vivienne westwood, ashish and christopher kane; to the monochrome goodness of meadham kirchhoff and giles – london has certainly cemented it’s position as the home of edgy fashion! just ask the front row-ers (or frowers, as they like to call them), consisting of the who’s who (and wannabe who’s who) of the fashion world rocking more labels than you can shake a stick at!

the fash pack were certainly a sight to behold this season, as we saw everything from leather to leotards, feathers to frills, and even heelless heels! be sure to check out our favourites below, as well as albums on our facebook page. this season also saw a couple of firsts: the first time we realized that comfortable shoes are a must at fashion week, and the first time a show was shown on the piccadilly circus sign as we teamed up with burberry to broadcast their new collection!

phew! so as the bustle at somerset house winds down, we’re taking things easy at hq with long well-deserved sips of our revive. until next season that is…

lips.jpg

each season, designers and their creative teams give us a whole bunch of beauty ideas to play with.

here are five that you might be trying before spring.

the fruit inspired lip: lip colours go fruity with strawberry pinks and tangerine oranges.

the red eyeshadow: also known as the zombie look. red eyeshadow for a grunge effect.

the bobbed bang:
who thought the mid length bob with a fringe would be a beauty trend? is it just me or do bobs remind you of suburban housewives?

the big hair: it is big, seventies inspired and was on a catwalk near you. will you be trying the blow out?

slicked back: if big hair is not for you, then maybe this seasons slicked back hair is.

what beauty trends borrowed off the catwalk are you experimenting with?

platfoms.jpg

flat platforms sound confusing don’t they? platforms are usually neck breaking height, so flat platforms? see what I mean? confusing!
well they are causing as much of a storm as kitten heels did last season. did you succumb to the kitten heel?

the trend goes tragedy is a mix of a wedge, far eastern stack wooden slipper and western platform.

always wanted to look like a Geisha morphed with your stacked platform? this look is right up that street.

denim jacket.jpg

i do not know about you but i am sick of the cold! i cannot wait to ditch my blanket heavy winter coat for spring alternatives.

what winter coat has seen you through the snow and cold? lately, i have been wearing lots of faux furs and faux shearling.

this spring is all about…

peacoats: why do peacoats work so well with spring? i am not sure but they cropped up everywhere on spring summer catwalks.

biker jackets: did you work the winter shearling trend? well swap it for the biker trend. not sure what you need to wear this trend? a leather biker jacket will do quite nicely.

trench/mac coats: chic, timeless and works a punch with the 70′s trend.

lingerie inspired bed coats: thoughts on the lingerie as outerwear? well it goes one step further this season with floaty, bed like negligee jackets worn over clothes.

long denim coat: it is soft, it is 70′s inspired, it is in a high street store near you. it will be everywhere this summer.

the 70′s trend has a lot to answer for this season! fringing is everywhere. It is hanging off casual and evening wear. It is also swishing off accessories.

is it a trend or a tragedy? i think it should come with a ‘wear with caution’ label.

after all, no one wants to end up looking like they are in cowboy costume or even worse unraveling at their very seams!

what accessories have you got your eye on for spring? here are five top spring summer 2011 accessories.

1. belt purse: do you think the belt purse could the fancy cousin of the much detested bum bag?

2. wedges: has there ever been a summer when wedges were not in? not that I recall. the perennial summer favourite is back in force.

3. wide brim hat: you may need this to top off your blow out or glossy fringed bangs this summer.

4. tasseled bag: i lost count of how many shows had tasseled bags on the runway. how many tassels is a tassel too many though?

5. platforms: chunky, stacked and high. those are the keywords for platforms this season. they clomp the kitten heel of last season to the curb.

marian in pajama pants.jpg

what do you make of the fashion pajama pant? also known as the slouchy printed pair of pants usually with drawstring waist.

usually crimes against fashion are creations that are uncomfortable, sexist and uncomfortable yet again! now the only crimes being decreed against the unassuming pajama pant is that it looks almost too comfortable. so much so, that they literally look like the actual pair of pants you slept in last night! clearly not a problem in my book (one as seen in the above image of me).

is wearing this pant style a no or is it all about how it is styled? style the pajama pant with caution as no one wants to look like they left home, sleepwalking in their sleepwear.

were fashion designers having bouts of chronic insomnia when these designs came to mind?

new season heralds a long list of new trends. what was your favourite from last season?
with so much new on the up, the old can make its way out.

1. kitten heels: with the advent of spring, platforms take over from the much debated kitten heel. did you adopt the kitten heel trend like michelle obama?

2. aviator jackets: fashion has switched its obsession with all things flying for all things biker. will you be getting on your bike and working the biker chic look?

3. camel: it came, it saw, it conquered. this classic colour makes way for summer 2011 colours such as orange, yellow and white.

4. buns: time to free the loose bun. the question is seventies big hair a do or don’t?

5. skinny leg:  pants go flared for summer. time to say goodbye to chaffed legs.

leo print.jpg

are you an animal print sort of a girl? if you are, this season is your time to shine. so many collections both on the high street and catwalk are laden with animal prints. everything from your humble leopard print, snake prints to the new print about town, the giraffe print.

is there is an unspoken law on the amount of animal prints a girl can wear in a go? there are a number of us who will only wear one animal print at a time. there are also those who follow the philosophy of the more the merrier.

the lady i spotted yesterday in the leopard print coat, zebra print tote bag, tiger print ballet pumps was definitely a member of the more being the merrier party.

her outfit begs the question; how much animal print equals tragedy?

fashion always seems to borrow inspiration from past decades. what has been
your favourite fashion decade to date? this spring without a shadow of a
doubt the biggest trend is 70′s inspired fashion. here are five things to
get you looking on trend.

1. the high waisted skinny flare:
designers cannot make up their mind. one minute they have us dashing out for skinny pants, the next it is the wide leg. which do you prefer by the way? as its name suggests this high waist pant cut has a narrow cut which gently juts out into a controlled wide leg. the less austin powers and more 2011, the better.

2. the glamorous dress: need inspiration? look no further then the opulence of Studio 54. the keywords are slinky, decadent and silk jersey.

3. the pussy-bow blouse: what was the first blouse you ever bought? mine was a bronze satin thing with a large bow at the neck. very miss moneypenny no? well the look is in and belted.

4. grandma’s knit pin piece: we have all got that piece that is a little ‘grandma’ and looks like she could have made it from a pin; knitting or other. drag out your crochet, broderie anglaise and macrame pieces as they are huge for spring 2011.

5. platforms/wedges: what did you make of autumn’s kitten heel trend? did you wear
it? it is being kicked out the way by its chunky cousin; the platform. designers keep it looking less shaft and more stylish by keeping it sculptural and streamlined.
